Cubed Steak Makes an Inexpensive Meal

This recipe is such a delicious and inexpensive way to eat cubed steak. Cubed steak is great for cooking in the slow cooker because it is a tough cut of meat. The slow cooking process really helps tenderize it.

You only need cubed steak, an onion, and a handful of common pantry items for this recipe.

How To Make Crock Pot Cubed Steak With Gravy

The cubed steaks are seasoned with seasoned salt and garlic powder and coated in flour and then browned in some oil before being placed in the crock pot.

The gravy is a simple mixture of a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup, an envelope of brown gravy mix, and an envelope of onion gravy mix, plus a little water.

A sliced onion and the gravy mixture get placed on top of the cubed steak.

Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or on HIGH for 4 to 6 hours.

The gravy mixes already have plenty of flavor and plenty of thickeners in them to produce a thick, richly flavored gravy.

Does Cubed Steak Get More Tender The Longer It Cooks?

Cubed steak is a very tough, inexpensive cut of meat. Cooking it at a low temperature breaks down the collagen in the meat fibers and makes it really tender. That being said, it is possible to overcook any meat which can make it dry and tough. It is best cooked on LOW between 6 and 8 hours, but I wouldn’t recommend cooking it any longer.

Equipment Needed

You will need a 6-quart or larger slow cooker for this recipe. I love using my Hamilton Beach Portable 6 Quart Set & Forget Digital Programmable Slow Cooker.

  1. We live this recipe. Love the ease of preparation and the flavors. Freezes well also. I make large batches and then freeze in individual servings for my elderly mil to just warm up at her convenience.

Only problem I have found is finding the onion soup mix. Had to order on Amazon for a while, but were able to find it in the grocery store today. Looking forward to supper tonight.

Made this tonight. Wow! Very good! I added some worcestershire sauce and used cream of potato soup and a can of mushrooms instead of cream of mushroom soup. Very tender. Thank you for a new go to dinner!

  5. Excellent recipe. I never have the onion gravy on hand so I do two of brown gravy. I also add two small cans of mushrooms!

  6. Can you add other ingredients rather than the 2 envelopes for a similar result ? It would like to avoid the chemicals.

I used onions sliced-4 and onion powder (about a tablespoon).
I made gravy from the frying pan and homemade mushroom soup (sauté mushrooms in 1Tbsp butter, add a Tbsp of flour when mushrooms are soft and stir into mushrooms. Then add a cup of half and half or whole milk and stir till thickened. Mix with beef gravy and onion powder and pour onto onion covered cube steak

It’s too hot to cook a regular meal this time of year in Northern Nevada so I adapted this for a pressure cooker. Perfect. Browned the cubed steak in the cooker, added the ingredients and set for 40 minutes. The meat was perfect but needed more liquid. Thanks for the recipe; hope you don’t mind the share.
