Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes are super crispy and delicious, plus they are healthy. Only a tiny little bit of oil is needed. Serve them with some Comeback Sauce for a fabulous southern party appetizer or side.
I recently got an Air Fryer and I love it!! I haven’t tried making that many foods in it yet, but Fried Green Tomatoes were at the top of my list of foods to try.
Fried Green Tomatoes are one of my all time favorite southern foods. I especially love them in a BLT sandwich.
Fried Green Tomatoes aren’t the healthiest of foods. I typically fry mine in bacon fat in a cast iron skillet. But these Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes are super healthy. You can eat them as is or serve with some comeback sauce.
Air Fryer
I have the Air Fryer XL 5.3 QT and it is so easy to use. I reheat leftovers in it all the time. It doesn’t take much longer than the microwave AND it makes the food crispy.
UPDATE: I have just started using the COSORI Pro II Air Fryer Oven Combo, 5.8QT and it is my favorite air fryer by far!
You’ll need an oil mister for this recipe to give the tomatoes a very light coating of oil. Do NOT use PAM or other cooking sprays in an Air Fryer.
For an extra crispy coating these Fried Green Tomatoes are first coated in flour, then dipped in an egg/buttermilk mixture, and finally coated in a mixture of cornmeal and Panko crumbs.
TIPS FOR MAKING AIR FRYER FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
- I use the Air Fryer XL 5.3 QT Black Deluxe . You can also get one in a 3.4-quart version, but unless you are just cooking for one, I recommend the larger size.
- Non-Stick cooking sprays like Pam are not recommended for use with Air Fryers. For best results, you’ll need to get an Oil Mister.
- The air fryer will get the tomatoes pretty crispy in a short amount of time. Be careful not to leave them in too long or the tomatoes will get too soft.

These turned out amazing! Iโve never tried to bread anything before myself so I was a little nervous but Iโm surprised at how easy it was! I added crushed red pepper to the batter and egg mixture. I used them to make a goat cheese BLT – AMAZING!
These are sooooo good fixed into a BLT!
What temperature do you set on the air fryer?
This recipe was messy, but oh so good.
I have to be gluten free, so I subbed in GF flour and bread crumbs.
I used a gluten free Masa corn meal/flour as well.
The only change I made (other than the gluten free) is I added garlic powder to the flour.
Other than that, no other changes…
The worst part of this recipe is waiting for the tomatoes to cool so I could dig IN!!
These fried green tomatoes done in the air fryer were better than the ones I normally make in the cast iron skillet – and using just a fraction of the oil. Probably cut the calories in half or more than half.
This recipe, by the way, was the first I tried with my new air fryer. It cooked the FGT so fast, and perfectly browned and crispy on all sides. I am completely sold now on the need for an air fryer.
has anyone ever tried freezing them after air frying?
I wouldn’t. The tomatoes will lose structure and become mushy
Yes I have just lay out and let cool. I put them on a paper plate then slide into a freezer bag. FGT anytime you want them. Just cook them in airfryer for a few minutes on each side. Yummm
I would like to try this but I have been told by many Chef’s that this would not work because they will get soggy. Or they would seem rubbery tasting.
When you take them out of the freezer and cook them do them seem rubbery tasting to you?
I have a Power AirFryer Pro that has 3 racks. Has anyone made the FGT using one of these – or one similar?
Thanks!
Actually it is on the Print Recipe page that is says Air Fryer Fired (not Fried)
Hi. Your Title says Air Fryer Fired Green Tomatoes instead of ‘Fried’
That was delicious! I picked up two green tomatoes today on a whim. I didn’t know if there was a such thing as air fried green tomatoes but I was hoping so. Yours was the first link I clicked on when googling. Thank you for sharing the sauce recipe as well.
