Air Fryrer Fried Green Tomatoes

I recently got an Air Fryer and I love it!! I haven’t tried making that many foods in it yet, but Fried Green Tomatoes were at the top of my list of foods to try.

Fried Green Tomatoes are one of my all time favorite southern foods. I especially love them in a BLT sandwich.

Fried Green Tomatoes aren’t the healthiest of foods. I typically fry mine in bacon fat in a cast iron skillet. But these Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes are super healthy. You can eat them as is or serve with some comeback sauce.

I have the Air Fryer XL 5.3 QT and it is so easy to use. I reheat leftovers in it all the time. It doesn’t take much longer than the microwave AND it makes the food crispy.

You’ll need an oil mister for this recipe to give the tomatoes a very light coating of oil. Do NOT use PAM or other cooking sprays in an Air Fryer.

For an extra crispy coating these Fried Green Tomatoes are first coated in flour, then dipped in an egg/buttermilk mixture, and finally coated in a mixture of cornmeal and Panko crumbs.

  • I use the  Air Fryer XL 5.3 QT Black DeluxeYou can also get one in a 3.4-quart version, but uunless you are just cooking for one, I recommend the larger size.
  • Non-Stick cooking sprays like Pam are not recommended for use with Air Fryers. For best results, you’ll need to get an Oil Mister.
  • The air fryer will get the tomatoes pretty crispy in a short amount of time. Be careful not to leave them in too long or the tomatoes will get too soft.

  1. I have a Power AirFryer Pro that has 3 racks. Has anyone made the FGT using one of these – or one similar?

  2. That was delicious! I picked up two green tomatoes today on a whim. I didn’t know if there was a such thing as air fried green tomatoes but I was hoping so. Yours was the first link I clicked on when googling. Thank you for sharing the sauce recipe as well.

  3. Wonderfully delicious, couldn’t believe how good they were. I’ve always had problems with the coating staying on the tomatoes when frying the traditional way. But this recipe with a a little ingenuity (a tooth pick) to turn and move the tomato slices from dish to dish, kept the coating evenly distributed (no finger holes). I took the advice of a friend and used heavy cream instead of buttermilk and put all the seasoning in the egg/milk mixture. Additionally, I used lemon pepper, Tony’s Bold Creole Seasoning and garlic powder instead of regular salt and pepper. WOW! Not only a little kick, but the taste was something my Grandma would approve of.

  4. First time having a green tomato and it sure came out tasty! I did tweak it just slightly in that right before the flour dip, I lightly sprinkled one side of the tomato slice with garlic powder and cayenne pepper along with the salt and pepper. Gave it a little kick 🙂 otherwise followed everything else. Hubby was very pleased 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

    1. How small is your air fryer?? I would definitely be able to do 12-15 slices at a time in my Kalorik Max air fryer 26qt

  5. It had a good crust. However, it was a little bland. Next time, I’ll definitely add some slap your mama or old bay
