Ingredients Used For Instant Pot Southern Green Beans

To make these pressure cooked southern green beans I use bacon, onion, chicken broth, seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and butter. It’s not a ton of ingredients but so much flavor gets infused into these green beans.

Equipment Needed

You will need a pressure cooker for this recipe. I use an Instant Pot 6-Quart 9-in-1 Pressure Cooker.

Tips For Making Instant Pot Green Beans

  • When sauteing in the Instant Pot, be sure to let the pot get hot before adding the bacon. This will help prevent sticking.
  • I like my southern green beans to be very tender. If you want your green beans to still be a little crisp, only pressure cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • I like to cut the green beans, especially the larger ones in half so they are easier to eat.

Notes

Cooking time does not include the time it takes for the pressure cooker to pressurize. This can take about 10 minutes.

I was craving southern style green beans tonight but didnโ€™t have any bacon in the house, so I subโ€™d some dried prosciutto that needed to be used up, and changed out the butter for bacon fat that I had in the fridge. It worked! It was delicious, but I will say, I canโ€™t wait to make this again with actual baconโ€ฆ and I WILL be making this again. So simple, quick and tasty *yum*.

Oh, and I noticed people using different cooking times on here, I wanted to reference that I used the listed 7 minutes at high pressure with 10 minutes natural release, and my fresh beans were a perfect tenderness. It should also be referenced that I used an 8 qt IP so except for the beans, I did the remaining ingredients 1 ยฝ x the original measurements listed in the recipe. This was to accommodate the fact that I have to use a minimum of 1 ยฝ cups of liquid in the 8 qt per my IPโ€™s instructions. It worked so I hope that helps others using an 8 qt size as well. Just make this already and Enjoy!

I donโ€™t see a way to edit my comment so Iโ€™ll add this here – I meant to say that because of my 8 qt size IP, I did the ingredients 1 ยฝ xโ€™s the measurements in the original recipeโ€ฆ Except for the green beans, bacon, onion and crushed red pepper. So basically it was 1 ยฝ xโ€™s the liquid and seasonings only. I hope that helps.

This tasted like the southern beans at our favorite BBQ restaurant! Sooooo good! My husband loved them. My only comment would be that I only cooked the beans for 5 minutes instead of 7 because my beans were skinny. They were perfectly overdone just like southern beans should be!

  3. Denis Scott says:

Thanks again . Was very good with my smoked chicken thighs and brown rice also cooked in the instant pot.

This turned out great. I substituted a little left over country ham for the bacon and added a little olive oil.
