Ingredients Used For Instant Pot Southern Green Beans

To make these pressure cooked southern green beans I use bacon, onion, chicken broth, seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and butter. It’s not a ton of ingredients but so much flavor gets infused into these green beans.

Equipment Needed

You will need a pressure cooker for this recipe. I use an Instant Pot 6-Quart 9-in-1 Pressure Cooker.

Tips For Making Instant Pot Green Beans

  • When sauteing in the Instant Pot, be sure to let the pot get hot before adding the bacon. This will help prevent sticking.
  • I like my southern green beans to be very tender. If you want your green beans to still be a little crisp, only pressure cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • I like to cut the green beans, especially the larger ones in half so they are easier to eat.

  1. I was craving southern style green beans tonight but didn’t have any bacon in the house, so I sub’d some dried prosciutto that needed to be used up, and changed out the butter for bacon fat that I had in the fridge. It worked! It was delicious, but I will say, I can’t wait to make this again with actual bacon… and I WILL be making this again. So simple, quick and tasty *yum*.

Oh, and I noticed people using different cooking times on here, I wanted to reference that I used the listed 7 minutes at high pressure with 10 minutes natural release, and my fresh beans were a perfect tenderness. It should also be referenced that I used an 8 qt IP so except for the beans, I did the remaining ingredients 1 ½ x the original measurements listed in the recipe. This was to accommodate the fact that I have to use a minimum of 1 ½ cups of liquid in the 8 qt per my IP’s instructions. It worked so I hope that helps others using an 8 qt size as well. Just make this already and Enjoy!

    1. I don’t see a way to edit my comment so I’ll add this here – I meant to say that because of my 8 qt size IP, I did the ingredients 1 ½ x’s the measurements in the original recipe… Except for the green beans, bacon, onion and crushed red pepper. So basically it was 1 ½ x’s the liquid and seasonings only. I hope that helps.

  2. This tasted like the southern beans at our favorite BBQ restaurant! Sooooo good! My husband loved them. My only comment would be that I only cooked the beans for 5 minutes instead of 7 because my beans were skinny. They were perfectly overdone just like southern beans should be!

Thank you for this recipe , my lady enjoyed the beans I used lemon pepper and Italian seasoning along with the garlic powder..
Thanks again . Was very good with my smoked chicken thighs and brown rice also cooked in the instant pot.

  4. This turned out great. I substituted a little left over country ham for the bacon and added a little olive oil.

  5. Made this recipe many times. So good. Have used whole frozen green beans and they taste great!

  6. Shirley Allen

This recipe is very easy and very tasty! I always use the thick bacon, actually it is Wrights Applewood. You can use 2 slices instead of 4, since bacon is thick! I have had rave reviews about these green beans!

I LOVE this recipe! I’ve made it several times. It’s so easy and tasty! I add little yellow potatoes on the top before cooking, I make a big batch and cook for 8 minutes, which is perfect for well cooked beans and then potatoes are not over cooked. We eat these green beans, bacon, and potatoes for our whole meal!

Great idea. Tried this recipe and I had a pork chop prepared, but my 100 year old Mother said, I could just eat beans for my meal… so that is what we did, as you suggested! She asked me to add potatoes… Delish!

Very good I’m cooking it now in my frying pan sautéed. Thank you Deborah Everett

  9. Loved it! Very little prep work & SO tasty. I added extra of all the spices like I do w most recipes. And cut cook time by 1 minute, will cut by 2 mins next time so beans aren’t quite so soft (I know, soft is the Southern way!). My college daughter, like me, is not a big green bean fan but she loved this, asking me to make them again a couple days later!
