Cabbage Soup with Smoked Sausage is loaded with both cabbage and slices of smoked sausage. A little cream adds some richness to this comforting, hearty soup that’s perfect for a winter meal.
It’s full of chunks of potato, carrots, and onion and is really more of a stew than a soup. Serve with cornbread or fresh bread for a filling meal.
I’m actually not a huge fan of soup, but once the dreary winter weather arrives, I do crave a hot bowl of soup every now and then.
Cabbage, however, I’m a huge fan of. This Cabbage and Noodles recipe is one of my favorite comfort foods and I also love this Sweet and Sour Cabbage recipe.
I love the way cabbage tastes in a soup. It soaks up the other flavors so well and it’s a natural choice for pairing with smoked sausage.
Easy To Make
This is a really simple soup to make. Garlic, onion, carrot, dried thyme, chicken bouillon, a little brown sugar, and caraway seeds (optional) flavor the soup. The ingredient list is fairly long, but this recipe can be made in under 30 minutes if you prep as you cook.
Cabbage Soup with Smoked Sausage Storage

Can this be put in jars and canned (I imagine it would be pressure cooked)
What’s the carb content?
Question – Can I add bacon In addition to sausage ? ๐ค
Searched many similar recipes and picked this one….its good and I was excited to find a use for caraway seeds, impressed! Would probably cut back on the brown sugar and add some salt maybe at least a teaspoon, overall very good though!
Excellent. The only change we made: We took out 1/3 of the soup, before adding the sausage, and blended/pureed it. Then put it back in the pot. It gave it a really nice consistency.
This was amazingly delicious! I was apprehensive because my husband dislikes any cabbage recipes I make but since it had sausage I figured he would eat it regardless… HE LOVED IT!!! Thank you so much!
Use cream of celery instead of cream ..better flavot
Is there a way to convert this recipe to a crock pot meal?
I did use the crock pot. cooked on high to start, the 3 hrs on high. until carrots were tender. I forgot brown sugar.
Delicious. Thanks.
Oh lawdy is this good, I cook for six, so used the family package of smoked sausages from Eckrich. It has 3 sausages in it, used two heads of cabbage, mmmm mmmm. I think the secret is to get the sausage nicely browned so that when it goes back in it adds a little color to the stock, really good recipe.
