What Is A Trifle?

A trifle is an English dessert that consists of layers of fruit, cake and cream presented in a glass bowl. Traditional trifles are made with sponge cakes soaked with sherry. Angel food cake is very similar to sponge cake but it is lacking egg yolks. Using store-bought angel food cake (you can usually find them in the deli section) makes this dessert easy and stress-free.

Substitutions

  • If you don’t have Amaretto, you can use 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract instead.
  • Pound Cake can be used instead of Angel Food Cake.
  • Peaches can be used instead of strawberries.
  • You can use frozen strawberries instead of fresh.

Make-Ahead Dessert

This trifle is a great make-ahead dessert. For best results, make 4 to 12 hours in advance.

Use A Trifle Bowl

I love my trifle bowl and use it all the time. It is great for layered salads too. Mine is about 8 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep. It is the perfect size for this trifle.

How To Store Strawberry Amaretto Trifle

Will keep for about 3 days in the refrigerator but the cream and strawberries start to break down over time.
