Old-Fashioned Cabbage Casserole is a southern favorite with a creamy cabbage filling topped with buttery cracker crumbs. This creamy, cheesy casserole is comfort food at its best.
Cabbage is one of my favorite vegetables to cook with. It’s inexpensive and available year round. Scroll down to find more cabbage recipes.
This is a recipe that’s been popular for years. You can find a recipe for Cabbage Casserole in just about every southern church or community cookbook.
How To Make Old-Fashioned Cabbage Casserole
First, coarsely chop a small head of green cabbage. You don’t need to chop it too small, just into pieces that are small enough to eat easily and remember that it will shrink some as it cooks.
Then cook the cabbage along with some sliced sweet onion in butter. There’s something magical about cabbage and butter together. You just need to cook it part way at this point. It will cook more in the oven. Season with salt and pepper.
Transfer the cabbage mixture to a casserole dish.
Mix together a can of condensed Cream of Chicken soup and 1/3 cup of mayonnaise and spread over the cabbage. Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Celery could be used instead. Do not add anything except the mayonnaise to the soup (Don’t follow the directions on the can for making the soup.)
Sprinkle a mixture of crushed Ritz crackers, melted butter, and shredded cheddar cheese on top and bake until golden and buttery. I think this will become one of your favorite casseroles!

This recipe sounds so good! Cabbage is a fav@our house. Ty for your recipe.
This is a great recipe! My Mom used to make this one. We are on a low Carb plan so we omit the crackers and add a pound of ground Beef or Ground Turkey. Sprinkle the top with grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese and some Bacon Bits. Absolutely delicious!
Great tip to add some ground beef!
Yes it was so good just like my grand mom made when I was little it gets a5star vote from me thank you for sharing
My granddaughter in-law, tried it and the rest is history, she doesn’t cook so I told her I would show her how to make it. She absolutely loved it! I have made it a few more times since for me and I find I like it better if I don’t add the cheese until after I take it out of the oven. I wasn’t a fan of cabbage but, I have changed my mind now, I will eat anything with cabbage.
Made this to take to a church dinner. Not a serving came home. They loved it. “Just like my mama used to make it “ most of the attendees were over 65 so that’s quite a compliment. This is a keeper.
I’m making my second batch. It was so good! Passed the recipe on to my girlfriend.
Excellent Side Dish!
I have made this recipe many times and it has never failed to get high marks from friends and family! So easy and delicious. It is one my favorite veggie casseroles. I served it tonite with Cheese Perogies and a tossed salad and my family gobbled it up. Again.
Can this be made the day before and Then cooked next day?
Made this and my family loved it! My only additions were garlic powder and a few French fried onions on top with the crackers. Definitely a keeper in this house

That’s wonderful Peggy!
My husband ate this every day until gone! Said he could eat every night if I would cook it.
Absolutely out of this world! The husband suggested adding cauliflower! Definitely making again!!
We loved this recipe! I made it as is but did add pepper and a roasted garlic seasoning to the onion and cabbage and it really did go over well, my husband even went back for more and he rarely eats cabbage. I will be making this again.
Wife is not crazy about cabbage, but she loved this casserole.
Absolutely delIcious , next time I am going to top it with the French fried crispy onions.
Can u use canned cabbage in this recipe?
NEVER‼️ FRESH, only way to go. EZ to cut/chop head with cutting board & large, sharp knife. After quartering head, cut out hard core b4 chopping. I cut the core into to chunks to snack on later.
