Tips For Making Microwave Pralines

  • Different microwaves may require different cooking time. Cooking times given are an estimate. You may find you need to microwave for a shorter or longer time.
  • Use a large bowl. The mixture will boil up some and you don’t want it to overflow.
  • When you stir the mixture, it should begin to change color and start to look creamy. It will also thicken. If not, it needs to be microwaved longer. Return it to the microwave for another 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Be very careful when removing the bowl from the microwave. It will be very hot.
  • You must scoop the pralines out onto the baking sheet very quickly. The mixture will start to thicken and harden rapidly.

Made the microwave pralines, it came out like caramel and not pralines, I cooked exactly like the recipe said

  2. This recipe did not work for me at all. I have a 1000 watt microwave. The first batch I followed the recipe exactly and the smelled and tasted like burned sugar. For the second batch, I microwaved for 6 minutes, then added the butter, nuts, vanilla, and salt and spooned them out. They turned out hard and sticky.

Not sure why it went so wrong!

Great recipe have made it lots of times i have tried in 1100 1200 and 900 my best one is the 1200 watts for 10 minutes and i added vanilla it makes a big differnce

This recipe just saved me $40plus dollars! I LOVE New Orleans style pralines and was just about to order some…at $27.95/lb plus $15.00/shipping…when I thought I might try making them AGAIN. I have made (and thrown away) stovetop pralines at least 4 times in my lifetime. These turned out perfect.
I have an 1100 watt microwave and I followed the directions exactly. I was a little nervous but I stayed close to the microwave so that I could stop it if I smelled the slightest bit of burnt sugar. The smell… just before time was up was the same smell that you get when you walk into a fudge shop or something like that.
    Thanks!!

  5. Hi Christin,
Can you tell me the wattage on your microwave? I’d love to try this recipe, but want to adjust the cooking time on the front end, if needed. Thanks

    1. My wattage is high but I followed the recipe. If the humidity is high don’t try this. Mine turned out great.

    2. I have made these microwave pralines for years. My microwave wattage is 1100. The only difference in my method and this one. I add b sugar and cream and microwave on high for 8 minutes. Then immediately stir in the butter pieces quickly and the stir in the pecans. Then spoon out onto foil.

Turned out very good…nex time will do a lil cream….to null dat sweetness…but cut the time a lot compared to stove top cooking.. I used a regular Walmart microwave!! Thanks

  8. Unfortunately my 7 & 5 cooking time burned the sugar. Probably try 1/2 the recipe and cook 6 & 4.

  9. I have always had very I have always had very good luck making these pralines but today I have cooked the required amount of times and they are still not setting up What can I do can I give

    1. Cathy Lewis

Maybe the humidity. If you have air-conditioning, turn it lower by a couple of degrees for about an hour and try again.

    2. I made this recipe today and I’m very upset after using all of these ingredients and mine did not set up either. . The taste is there, but it sure doesn’t make pralines. It would begood over cheesecake or bread pudding

      1. Exactly….. I don’t like this recipe at all… I had to throw away one batch and the next one is going to be used for topping I guess, it’s too crumbly

Was it cloudy outside? Candy of any kind won’t set if its cloudy out. The weather will effect the setting. Its best to make candy on a clear day.

      2. Cathy Johnson

I made it today, didnt set up.either. I have made this in the past and seemed to thicken too fast on me. Wonder what happen

Just made your Pralines… in honor of The New Orleans Saints(who should have been at the Super Bowl in Atlanta)‼️

Just finished making these and they turned out great! So easy. I did microwave for one minute longer, and you weren’t kidding about them setting up quickly…I could’ve used another set of hands! They are delicious! This is second recipe of yours I’ve tried and loved. Cook your southern style green beans at least once a week.

  12. Since microwave ovens differ in cooking power, I too would like to know if this could be done in a saucepan on stovetop & would the cooking times be different then? Longer or Shorter? Thanx – Jude W2AVY

    Hello Christin!

Thanks for such a wonderful recipe! It looks so delicious. I have a question that can it be cooked in a frypan on a stove? Or is this recipe cookable only by an oven?
