Type Of Chili

I use canned chili for this Cheesy Hot Dog Tater Tot Casserole but you could use homemade. Either with or without beans. You’ll need 2 15-ounce cans which would be just under 4 cups of homemade chili. I typically use one can with beans and one can without.

Other Ingredients For Cheesy Hot Dog Tater Tot Casserole

Eight hot dogs get sliced and added to the chili along with ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, finely chopped onion, and just a few red pepper flakes.

Assemble and Bake

Place the mixture in a 9×13-inch baking dish and sprinkle with 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese. Then top with the tater tots. Bake for 30 minutes to get the tater tots crispy. Then sprinkle another cup of shredded cheese on top and bake 10 more minutes. Then get ready to dig into all that cheese!

Recipe Tip

Be sure to either finely chop the onion or saute it for a few minutes. Otherwise it will taste raw and crunchy in the finished casserole.

Is This Casserole Spicy?

With 1/4 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, this casserole has minimal heat. Double the amount for more substantial heat or serve with hot sauce.

  1. According to my Son, and as often as he so desires me to make this for him, its not only tasty, cheesy, and saucie, he could, and does, live off this dish three nights in a row, almost weekly! This guy is 46 young years of age and Knows what is good and comfy to eat! In the middle of summer or dead cold of winter, its a great supper anytime!
I do jazz it one little way; no hot dogs, but…the chicken sausage’s with apple! Or pinnaple! That’s it! And it’s amazing! TRY THIS SOON!

  2. Cheesy Hot Dogs Tater Tot Casserole is a definite Keeper!!

  3. Made it for my picky eaters and they loved it. I cooked the onions and hotdogs together first which added some extra great flavor. Definitely going to be part of dinner rotation!

  4. I wasn’t so sure about this when I decided to try it, but in fact it turned out well! I did saute the onions before putting them in the mix because my husband hates raw onions and I didn’t think they’d cook enough in the oven. I also baked it at 400 degrees instead of 350 since the tater tots I buy call for a 450 degree oven. They didn’t turn out terribly crispy but were done enough for the dish. Definitely one I’ll be making again!

  5. I made this for my husband and my kids. I didn’t think I would care for it because it’s not the kind of thing that I like, but this is actually really really good

  8. THANK YOU FOR SHARING, you did great.

This stuff is absolutely amazing and it’s made with ingredients most have in hand at all times especially with kids in the house.

We always have cheddar cheese in the fridge and a couple to a few packs of hotdogs and a pack or 2 of tater tots in the freezer usually at all times along with several cans of chili and ketchup and Worcestershire sauce which those ingredients are all I used because they were all we have at this time.

I cut the recipe in half because I only had a half bag of tots that needed used up and this was excellent and turned out most excellent for a quick hassle free meal. I didn’t measure anything, just sliced up an opened pack of hotdogs that needed used, had 5 leftover in the pack and used a can of thick chili with beans and some ketchup and Worcestershire sauce and mixed it all together following the rest of the direction. Turned out great.

Be a nice easy dinner on cold evenings at home.
