Ingredients Used For Instant Pot Southern Green Beans

To make these pressure cooked southern green beans I use bacon, onion, chicken broth, seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and butter. It’s not a ton of ingredients but so much flavor gets infused into these green beans.

Equipment Needed

You will need a pressure cooker for this recipe. I use an Instant Pot 6-Quart 9-in-1 Pressure Cooker.

Tips For Making Instant Pot Green Beans

  • When sauteing in the Instant Pot, be sure to let the pot get hot before adding the bacon. This will help prevent sticking.
  • I like my southern green beans to be very tender. If you want your green beans to still be a little crisp, only pressure cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • I like to cut the green beans, especially the larger ones in half so they are easier to eat.

Used fresh-frozen pole beans and increased cook time to 8 minutes. Perfection.

  2. Elizabeth says:

Delicious! Iโ€™ve always cooked my green beans on the stove like my Mama always did. I thought Iโ€™d give it a shot in the IPโ€”I canโ€™t believe I waited so long! I stuck pretty close to your recipe, but added a couple of cups of no salt chicken stock, since I was using my 8 qt IP. I amped up the garlic, and used some Tonyโ€™s (Chachereโ€™s) for a little spice. Thanksโ€”Iโ€™ll never cook my green beans any other way!

  3. Stephanie Hallenbeck says:

I am doubling the amount of green beans. I think I should probably double the spices accordingly but do I need to double the chicken broth as well? I know most instant pot recipes only require approximately 1 – 1 1/2 cups of liquid. Can you help me with this, please?

  4. Mary Mendez says:

    Can I double this recipe?

  5. Sharon H says:

I am 80 years old and have been growing and canning green beans for well over 60 years, but I have never once pressure cooked green beans. My husband let my beans grow too big before picking them so they were big and tough; wasn’t sure how good they might turn out, but decided to try your directions for the Instant Pot. Oh my goodness. I love them. Just like I had cooked them for several hours! I sauteed smoky bacon and onions, then I added a smoked ham hock and cooked them. Really very good. Thank you for the inspiration! Iโ€™m also freeze drying 5 trays of raw green beans, and have 3 more trays of partially cooked and seasoned beans in the freezer. Lots of green beans this year!

  6. Mary says:

The BEST green bean recipe. I’ve tried other instant pot recipes and this one is far above the others I’ve made. They get better one to two days after cooking them. The seasoned salt takes it to another level. These green beans remind me of my grandmother’s back in the 1950s and 1960s. Make these and you will not be disappointed!!!

  7. Ellyn says:

Is this pressure cooked on high?

    1. Mary says:

These were very good! Wouldn’t change a thing!! Husband said these were a keeper! So easy and fast, but tasted like they were cooked all day. Used garden fresh green beans.

  8. Carolyn says:

Thank you for sharing! I can finally cook green beans that everybody loves!

  9. Toni Urbano-Goldinger says:

    Easy to follow! Delicious! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Sean says:

Always turns out great! Occasionally add minced garlic instead of garlic powder.
