Deviled Ham

Old-fashioned Deviled Ham makes a delicious savory spread and is a wonderful way to use up leftover ham. Spread it on crackers, cucumber slices, or between 2 pieces of white bread to make a sandwich. You can buy it in a can, but homemade is so much tastier.

What Is Deviled Ham?

Also referrred to as Ham Salad, it is a retro recipe that is similar to tuna salad or chicken salad. It is typically made with leftover ham, celery and onion with mayonnaise as a creamy base.

It’s salty, creamy, and a little spicy and there’s no better way to bring new life to leftover Easter ham.

Diced leftover ham is processed with mayonnaise, cream cheese, onion, Tabasco sauce, and mustard until it is finely minced.

How To Serve

Deviled Ham can be served as a spread on crackers or as a sandwich filling. It is also great on cucumber slices as an appetizer.

Recipe Tip

If you don’t have a food processor, you can very finely diced the ham and mix everything by hand.

Variations

This recipe is really flexible. Add more mustard of hot sauce if you like. Sweet pickle relish is a nice addition too.

I like the creaminess of adding some cream cheese, but you can use all mayo if you like.

How To Store

Deviled Ham is actually better a day after it is made and it can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing it.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces cream cheese,, softened
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped sweet onion
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon hot sauce,, I use Tabasco Sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce,, optional

Instructions

  • Place cream cheese, mayonnaise, and onion in a food processor and pulse 4 or 5 times.
  • Add remaining ingredients and pulse until ham is finely chopped.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

Some ham is very salty. Taste for saltiness before adding Worcestershire sauce and if it is already salty, leave the Worcestershire sauce out.

Thank you for a keto friendly recipe. I used horseradish mustard because I like a kick –either way this is a great recipe, and is easily multiplied for parties.

I used chopped ham shank, dijon mustard, 2 drops of Louisiana hot sauce, and just a couple drops of worchestershire. We had for lunch today and it was delish! The cream cheese cuts some of the spice and the saltiness of the ham. Thank you!

My girlfiend doesn’t cook. I DO. She works a 9-5 job, I don’t. I love finding lil simple gems like this to excite the taste buds. TY. It’s easy and delish. And having just passed Easter with ham leftovers it’s a win-win. BBTW. I like a little more attitude so I use Colemans prepared mustard.

So… no answer to Lisa’s question? Dry mustard (like you find in your spice rack) or prepared mustard (like you put on your hot dog)?

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

Sorry about the confusion. Prepared mustard. Dijon or whole grain work well. You can add a little more if you like mustard flavor.

  8. Lisa says:

Is it dry mustard or prepared mustard?
