Recipe Tips

Ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef.

Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days and can be frozen.

How Spicy Is This Soup?

If you use “Hot” Rotel tomatoes and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, it has a moderate amount of heat. For more heat, double the amount of cayenne pepper or add 1/4 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes.

  1. My Husband loved this and has requested I make it again several times since. And he Hates Cabbage!

  2. I just made this and it is awesome! I didn’t have any canned tomatoes on hand so I used a jar of tomato basil pasta sauce. I also threw in some potatoes incase that made it too salty and added a can of kidney beans just because. We loved it! Thanks for the recipe!!

  3. Superb; I, too, used low salt beef broth in favor of 2 bullion cubes and water; otherwise exact following of recipe. Very nice and thick. Delicious

I just finished this recipe and it is DELICIOUS !! The only addition I made was I added 10 garlic cloves plus one container of beef broth (32 oz)

  5. I was really impressed with this recipe, both its flavor and how easy it was to prepare. Perfect heat for those with low tolerance for spicy food.

  6. Made with plant based meat in a large pot on the stove. Per others’ suggestions added red beans and tomato sauce. No need for extra salt with the canned tomatoes. Very yummy with just the right amount of spice.

can you add beans to this and if so how much and what kind. My husband likes the soup at Shoney’s that is similar to this but has beans. thanks.

  8. I will be trying this delicious soup this weekend I know I going to love it is simple to cook Thank you

  9. So tasty. I added a can of tomatoe sauce and big squirt of worschestire sauce as well as the cayenne with a pinch of red pepper flakes. So much tastier than my usual go to cabbage roll soup!

  10. One person said there was not enough liquid. When I make this I’m going to use beef broth instead of water and bouillon cubes….I’ll just eye ball it to personal taste.

If there is not enough liquid for your tastes, you can add beef broth or tomato juice.

        1. Just add an equivalent amount of broth to how much water is called for. (You can also substitute a couple of teaspoons of Better Than Boullion Base for the bouillon or broth.)

  11. I added some Hienz ketchup for a little extra flavor and it taste Great. I added the ketchup per taste

We made this and it was dry, had to add tomato juice, was this possibly left out of the recipe by accident? The photo has MUCH more ‘liquid content’ than ours did. We didn’t drain off any of the juice from the canned vegetables either. Just curious what we did wrong.

    1. I add 2 cans crushed tomatoes and 1 regular size can tomatoe sauce…also add a couple potatoes

Where’s the rest of the nutrition facts. I’m diabetic and count carbs regularly. When you give the nutrition facts you should do just that. Disappointed in not knowing the rest of the facts on nutrition. I would try this recipe though. It looks and sounds so delicious. How about some more facts other than just the kcals
