They have tons of apple flavor, a sugary glaze, plus raisins and walnuts. With just the right amount of sweetness, these bars are perfect for a fall dessert or make a great addition to brunch.

How To Make Apple Butter Bars

  1. Beat the butter until creamy.
  2. Beat in brown sugar and granulated sugar.
  3. Beat in egg.
  4. Combine flour, baking soda, and apple pie spice.
  5. Add the flour mixture, alternating with apple butter.
  6. Mix in raisins and nuts.
  7. Transfer to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and bake for 20 to 24 minutes.
  8. Let cool and drizzle with glaze.

Customize

Don’t like raisins? Leave them out or use Craisins instead. The walnuts can be left out or you can substitute pecans. Or you can add 1/2 cup of finely diced apple to the batter. A half a cup of toffee bits would also be delicious in the batter.

Recipe Tip

You can use unsalted butter, but add a pinch or two of salt to the batter.

Storage

Will keep for 4 days in an airtight container at room temperature or they can be frozen for up to 2 months.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup salted butter, , softened
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 3/4 cup apple butter
  • 1/2 cup raisins or craisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk or half-and-half

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • With an electric mixer, beat butter until creamy.
    Add brown sugar and granulated sugar and beat until well combined.
  • Scrape down sides of bowl. Add egg and beat until mixed in.
  • Combine flour, baking soda, and apple pie spice.
  • With mixer on low, beat in half the flour mixture, then the apple butter and then remaining flour mixture.
  • Stir in raisins or craisins and walnuts.
    Transfer batter to prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Bake for 20 to 24 minutes.
    Let cool.
  • Whisk together glaze ingredients in a bowl until smooth.
    Drizzle glaze on cooled apple bars.
