Old-fashioned Deviled Ham makes a delicious savory spread and is a wonderful way to use up leftover ham. Spread it on crackers, cucumber slices, or between 2 pieces of white bread to make a sandwich. You can buy it in a can, but homemade is so much tastier.
Quick and Easy Recipe
You can whip up Deviled Ham in only about 5 minutes. Refrigerate overnight and the flavors only get better. ๐
What Is Deviled Ham?
Also referrred to as Ham Salad, it is a retro recipe that is similar to tuna salad or chicken salad. It is typically made with leftover ham, celery and onion with mayonnaise as a creamy base.
It’s salty, creamy, and a little spicy and there’s no better way to bring new life to leftover Easter ham.
Diced leftover ham is processed with mayonnaise, cream cheese, onion, Tabasco sauce, and mustard until it is finely minced.
How To Serve
Deviled Ham can be served as a spread on crackers or as a sandwich filling. It is also great on cucumber slices as an appetizer.
Recipe Tip
If you don’t have a food processor, you can very finely diced the ham and mix everything by hand.
Variations
This recipe is really flexible. Add more mustard of hot sauce if you like. Sweet pickle relish is a nice addition too.
I like the creaminess of adding some cream cheese, but you can use all mayo if you like.
How To Store
Deviled Ham is actually better a day after it is made and it can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing it.

Delicious! I love the added tang from the cream cheese. I used a whole grain Dijon, pepped up with hearty spoonful of horseradish, and added 1/4 sweet relish. I canโt wait for it to chill down. Now – sandwich, crackers, or celery sticks? Thanks for the recipe!
Just made as written. Delicious! Just like grandmaโs.
Christin,
I grew up in the north, but I love all of your southern recipes! They are
“down- home” good and I have tried many of them. Most contain ingredients that I have on hand and don’t have to make a trip to the grocery store before I can try them.
There are just the two of us and we do have a mound of leftover ham.
This sounds like a perfect recipe to make.
Does left over ham freeze well?
Look no further! 100% best deviled ham spread recipe. I added a 1/2t. Apple cider vinegar. But this was the absolute real deal! Thank you for posting this Spicy Southern Kitchen!๐
Do you think this would freeze well? Thereโs only two of us and that would make a huge amount. It looks really delicious and Iโm going to make it tomorrow,
I used left over spiral smoked ham. I purchased Hickory Farms vegetable cream cheese spread and the Pepper jack spread. No additional hot sauce was needed. I also added a celery stalk, not that it needed it but I had extra. Tastes great.
I used leftover baked pineapple with brown sugar ham. Turned out great as is. No adjustments required!
Many thanks for this recipe. I slow steep cured ham half shanks or picnic hams when they are on sale. I Have the butcher slice them in half, then boil one half and slice it for freezing in zip lock bags. When the mood hits this is just up my alley to prepare the Deviled Ham on julienned green leaves with veggies for one blast of a meal.
Swap chicken breast for ham. Now itโs deviled chicken. Still good!
Why isn’t ham mentioned on the ingredient list?
Itโs the 2nd to last ingredient before Worchestershire Sauce
(2cups ham )
