Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is a quick and easy meal that is an economical way to serve beef to your family. Cubed steaks are coated in flour and pan-fried. This country-style steak is covered in a super flavorful onion gravy that gets lots of onion flavor from not only a large sliced onion, but a packet of dry onion soup mix.

How To Serve

The whole meal can be made start to finish in about 20 minutes. I love to serve Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy over mashed potatoes to soak up all that yummy gravy with a side of peas. Are you a fan of peas mixed into your mashed potatoes? I love it!

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy

The pieces of cubed steak are dredged in a little flour that’s been seasoned with black pepper and garlic salt and then pan-fried in some vegetable oil. A cast iron pan is best, but any type of pan will work. The gravy is super easy to make from the pan drippings.

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is definitely worthy of a place on your regular dinner rotation!

  1. I saw the cubed steak in the super market I remember when I was younger it came out tough. So when I saw this recipe I figured I would give it a try. It was delicious and tender. My husband loved it also.

This recipe is true to form!!
My dad cooked cubed steaks the same way!! Dredged in flour.
I cooked the onion in a cast iron skillet for 15 minutes, I used olive oil.
    I removed them.
I seasoned the meat with salt and pepper, onion powder, and a little splash of Worcestershire sauce,
then I dredged them in the seasoned flour.
I cooked the meat till a temperature of 145f. ( I used some leftover bacon grease!!)
I took the meat out got the pan hot and put some beef broth in to break up the yummy stickings!!
I put the rest of the broth in along with the soup mix. Brought the pan to a boil, I added 2 tablespoons of cornstarch ( mixed well in a 1/4 cup of cold water. To the pan.
Let it simmer a few minutes.
Return the meat to warm up!! 5 more minutes!
Served with mashed taters and mixed veggies.
    Thanks for the great recipe!!

  3. Simple, fast, and great comfort food for cooler weather. Also, it’s good for the meat n potatoes kind of people.

  4. I made this tonight. I changed it from my “must try” to my “favs” folder. It was amazing! I bought a side of beef and I always make chicken fried steak with the cube steaks. I wanted to try something different. This is my new fav way of preparing cube steaks. I had to improvise because I didn’t have the onion soup dry mix so I used a can of campbells French onion soup, added half can of water and sprinkled with some brown gravy mix. Absolutely fabulous! I served it with ranch mashed potatoes and sautéed squash. Thanks for sharing! ❤️

  5. Awesome recipe!!…I saw the cube steaks at the grocery and thought I would try it..I am a novice when it comes to cooking but this recipe was easy to follow…The meal was delicious. I had the cube steaks with some garlic mashed potatoes. What a meal!!!…..Thanks again for the recipe..

  6. I love his meal……I put mine in a crock pot…… no one will be able to eat this method for meat that needs no cutting to eat!!

Turn on, go to work, dish it out when ready to eat!!

Simple and easy. Made this tonight with roasted garlic potatoes. All while working from home.

This is a great recipe that I use very often. I dropped the onion soup mix. For me it makes the gravy too strong and it is perfect without the extra flavor.

  9. My family absolutely loved this recipe! My husband bought this steak by accident and didn’t know what to do with it so I looked it up on google and found this recipe. It was quick and simple and so good! I followed the recipe almost exactly except for I switched beef broth for beefy mushroom soup. Served it with mashed potatoes and for those who like rice instead I made a pot of white rice.

I have never made cube steak before because I’ve been served this many times & never liked it much. The other day I found cube steak for a ridiculously low price so I bought it. I researched & researched & stumbled across this recipe. It’s the best! I used my beef & onion gravy but did EVERYTHING else the same. I served it over homemade potatoes. It was a hit! I will make this often. THANK YOU!

Oh… my… this is what my soul needed today! I even made it with 1 to 1 gluten free flour.
I didn’t have soup mix but all I did was look up the soup mix recipe and put in the spices needed. Was fantastic. I love that it’s not too breaded. This is a great recipe! Good job.

  12. I just made this. It is very good. Thank you. I didn’t have any soup mix though. Next time I will add Worcestershire, the soup mix, green peppers and mushrooms. I also used some Tony’s for that Cajun kick. I know next time it will be even better. Wish I could add pictures to this comment. Thank you, again. Very good!

  13. Excellent recipe to tweek to your personal tastes.

I omitted the onion soup mix and used a tsp of “Better than Bouillon” to jack up the beef flavor.

I didn’t use the beef broth and used 2 thinly sliced onions and a drained can of white mushrooms, I added 4 oz of water.

I let the skillet of beef simmer for 15 minutes, turned the meat and let it simmer until the meat was super tender (about 15 more minutes)

Served it with fresh peas, homemade sour dough bread and garlic mashed potatoes.

Totally awesome dinner, my guests were almost licking their plates

I have never left a review before but this was seriously delicious! Like amazingly delicious! I made the gravy with the drippings and some flour, onion soup and beef bouillon base/water. It’s smack yourself good! Super easy and tons of rich flavor! Definitely doing this again and it beats plain old cube steak in the crockpot with some beef gravy. Thanks for an amazing recipe!

Very delicious! Though I used low sodium beef broth, the onion soup mix did make it a tad too salty for our taste. Next time, I’d use less of the mix–or try none at all. The sauce already has a large onion in it, so the onion soup mix might be overkill. I used a T of Worcestershire sauce in it to jazz it up a bit…I simmered the beef for 20 minutes in the gravy to make sure it was fork tender…and it was!

Got cubed steak at a great price during the pandemic since I work for a food supplier. Tried this recipe and it was a hit! I’ll make it regularly now. Simple and yummy.
