Hush Puppies are a must with fried seafood and bbq! A flavorful cornmeal batter is fried up until golden and crispy on the outside,

Hush Puppies

Hush Puppies are fried pieces of cornmeal dough that are very popular throughout the south. They are very commonly served with fried fish and barbecue. There are many stories about the origination of hushpuppies and most seem to date back to the Civil War era. All of the stories share a common thread. These fried balls of dough were used to quiet barking dogs.

Crispy homemade Hush Puppies

Now you don’t want to share these hush puppies with your dog. They have onion in them which can make dogs very sick, plus fried foods aren’t the best thing for your 4-legged friend.

Hush Puppies

These hush puppies have just the right amount of sweetness ( I like a hush puppy on the sweet side) and are super crispy on the outside.

Hush Puppies are one of the easiest and most inexpensive foods you can make and they are positively addicting. You’ll want to pop one after the other into your mouth!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal, , NOT self-rising
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 small onion,, finely minced
  • 1 egg,, lightly beaten
  • Vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Add milk, onion, and egg and stir just until blended.
  • Pour about 2 inches of oil into a Dutch oven, large pot or deep pan. Heat oil to 375 degrees.
  • Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into oil and fry until golden on all sides. Fry in batches and do not overcrowd the pan or the oil temperature will drop too much. Remove with a slotted spoon to a paper towel-lined plate. Serve warm.

These look amazing! I want to make them for my boyfriend, he likes the flavor of onion but hates the texture. Could I use onion powder instead? And if so, how much? And do you think I should add more milk to make up for the lost moisture from the onion? Thanks!

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

Those are good questions! I would try 1 teaspoon onion powder. Or you could try grating a fresh onion. I bet he wouldn’t even notice the texture. Mix it all together and if you think it is too thick, you can add a little more milk.

    2. Chris says:

I’ll bet your boyfriend won’t even notice because the onions will be finely minced. I know someone who hates onions but ate pasta that had a sauce added that had onions in it and he liked the sauce. When I told him it had onions in it, he said he did not dislike onions, he just did not like biting into bits of onions. I would go ahead and make these and not tell your boyfriend what is in them and see his reaction after he eats one…….if he likes it, THEN tell him it has onion in it.

I just had to comment on Darla. My dog Mya looked exactly like her! My was 1/2 cocker spaniel and 1/2 sheltie. It sounds like her mannerisms were much the same as Darla’s as well. Mya was an exceptional dog and companion. She absolutely adored me and would follow me wherever I went. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body. Last November, at the old age of 16, I had to have her euthanized. It was very very sad, but I know in my heart it was her time. I miss her dearly and I hope that you get to spend many more years with Darla!

Oh, I know you must miss your dear Mya so much! I’ve wondered if Darla had some cocker spaniel or sheltie in her. I really hope Darla lives to be that old. We took her to the beach a few days ago and at first she was scared of the water, but then she loved it!

Awwwww, Darla is a cutie! Love the name too. Oh man, hushpuppies are so good! I wish I didn’t dread deep-frying things…or maybe it’s a good thing cuz i’d be eating this every day ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

I usually dread deep-frying too and do it rarely. But that makes it extra special when I do ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. C. Clark says:

Darla is mostly Gordon Setter! She looks real sweet! Can’t wait to try the hush puppies
My 2 Gordons liked anything that came out of the kitchen ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

She does look a lot like a Gordon Setter doesn’t she, but she doesn’t have any of the brown they usually have on their faces so I don’t know.

Hushpuppies are so popular in the south but I never see them served here in New England. ๐Ÿ™

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

Isn’t it crazy how in the year 2014 some foods are still so regional?

  7. Melanie @ Carmel Moments says:

I haven’t had hushpuppies in a very long time. They look perfect.
Beautiful dog! I love the silky black. Beautiful bowl too. Where did you find it?

    1. Christin Mahrlig says:

The bowl was made by a local potter who had a booth at the farmers market we enjoy going to during the summer months. My husband and I spotted it at the same time and thought the same thing- That would make a great food bowl for Darla!

  8. Kristi @ Inspiration Kitchen says:

Your puppy is adorable Christin and I love the fact that you rescued her and are giving her the best life possible. What a great story. Rescuing them is the best, isn’t it?
And these hush puppies look great too! Have a beautiful week and give that beautiful girl a hug! What a nice dog!
