Italian Sausage and Peppers

 

This simple and delicious Italian Sausage and Peppers recipe is a breeze to whip up for a family meal. It’s a classic meal that never gets old. Serve it over rice or pasta or stuff it into hoagie rolls for a filling dinner the whole family will enjoy.

Italian Sausage and Peppers

Italian Sausage and Peppers

Flavorful chunks of Italian sausage are combined with diced tomatoes, garlic, oregano, basil, lots of red and green bell pepper and onion for an easy weeknight meal. 
PREP: 5 minutes
COOK: 28 minutes
TOTAL: 33 minutes
SERVINGS: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 package Johnsonville Naturals Mild Italian Sausage
  • 1 green pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Add vegetable oil to a large pan and heat over medium-high heat. Add sausages and cook until browned on all sides. Remove sausage from pan and set aside (Note: You do not need to cook it through at this point.)
  • Add onion and peppers to grease left in pan and cook over medium heat until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Slice sausage into 1 to 1 1/2-inch pieces.
  • Return sausage to pan along with all other ingredients.
  • Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, until sausage is cooked through and sauce is thickened.
  • Serve on hoagie rolls if desired.

    The only to have Italian Sausage. This recipe although a southern one takes me back to the Jersey shore sausage sandwiches which I truly loved.

  3. Always a favorite in my home. I brown bite size sausage pieces, then the onions and peppers. Afterwards, all ingredients cook on low in the crockpot for 4 to 6 hours. The sausage is so tender it’s like a meatball! Spices are deliciously melded! Serverd on a brat roll with mozzarella.

  4. Absolutely delicious!! Today I doubled the recipe using Italian chicken sausage to serve for Christmas due to family members who doesn’t eat meat. 🤞 it will be as good!

  5. Excellent as is but I always improvise a bit. Added about 1 T brown sugar another 1/2 t salt a pinch red pepper flakes and 2 t balsamic. Cooked about 2 hours slow simmer lid off to thicken. Raves from the gang

    1. No but I usually use light Italian and tonight I’ve made it with turkey mild Italian…very tasty!!

  9. I made this recipe as written. Simple ingredients, but so much flavor. I served it on a hoagie with mozzarella on top. My husband loved it. I will definitely be making it again.
