Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is a quick and easy meal that is an economical way to serve beef to your family. Cubed steaks are coated in flour and pan-fried. This country-style steak is covered in a super flavorful onion gravy that gets lots of onion flavor from not only a large sliced onion, but a packet of dry onion soup mix.

How To Serve

The whole meal can be made start to finish in about 20 minutes. I love to serve Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy over mashed potatoes to soak up all that yummy gravy with a side of peas. Are you a fan of peas mixed into your mashed potatoes? I love it!

The pieces of cubed steak are dredged in a little flour that’s been seasoned with black pepper and garlic salt and then pan-fried in some vegetable oil. A cast iron pan is best, but any type of pan will work. The gravy is super easy to make from the pan drippings.

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is definitely worthy of a place on your regular dinner rotation!

  1. Yummy! And easy. Added mushrooms and green peppers. I’m going to make this yet again tonight!

  2. I made this exactly like the recipe said and even put peas in the mashed potatoes and it turned out spectacular! The meat was so tender and flavorful. I was looking for a quick recipe with cubed steak and this was perfect. Thank you.

This recipe was AMAZING! Quick and delicious. I didn’t have the whole onion, so I used frozen chopped peppers and onions that I had in my freezer. Also instead of beef broth I used water and added a few seasonings. I read how some people thought the beef broth was too salty. I also seasoned the steaks with garlic salt before covering in flour. The end result was PERFECT! My husband loved it! This will definitely be in the weeknight dinner rotation.

Usually use ground beef instead of steak & water instead of beef broth(too salty). I will try this with steak.

  5. I made it exactly how it said to make it but without the onions came out great thanks so much you guys

I also added green beans as a side, added mushrooms w/ the onion’s but if you ask me it’s all about the cast iron skillet!
Will make this recipe a must go to again and again..

Two things I changed. First, I wasn’t going to make a gravy with a 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, so I poured it out. Then is has you adding the broth at the same time as the onions. The onions looked caramelized in the picture, and I like them that way. So, I added the onions (with a little pat of butter) and cooked them some, then I added the broth and onion soup mix.
My Husband, Son and I all loved it!
This will be my new Cubed Steak Recipe

    1. I seriously think the oil amount is a typo, that seems like an awful lot. If I used oil it would be maybe a couple tbsp.

  8. A1, I made this and my family enjoyed it. I added a cup of fresh mushrooms for added flavor. I will definitely be making it again.
