Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is a quick and easy meal that is an economical way to serve beef to your family. Cubed steaks are coated in flour and pan-fried. This country-style steak is covered in a super flavorful onion gravy that gets lots of onion flavor from not only a large sliced onion, but a packet of dry onion soup mix.

How To Serve

The whole meal can be made start to finish in about 20 minutes. I love to serve Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy over mashed potatoes to soak up all that yummy gravy with a side of peas. Are you a fan of peas mixed into your mashed potatoes? I love it!

The pieces of cubed steak are dredged in a little flour that’s been seasoned with black pepper and garlic salt and then pan-fried in some vegetable oil. A cast iron pan is best, but any type of pan will work. The gravy is super easy to make from the pan drippings.

Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy is definitely worthy of a place on your regular dinner rotation!

  1. E-yass in my New Orleans slang, recipe was very simple and a def keeper. I added mushrooms as well. Yummy

I used the 50% low sodium beef broth. It was fantastic! We did use mushrooms, we used baby bellas. Net time I will go with white mushrooms. It just seemed a bit to beefy with the portabella mushrooms. Other than that I would not change a thing. What an inexpensive meal fit for company. Garlic mashed potatoes and fresh sauteed greens. Thank you for sharing this one, it’s a keeper.

It is steak that has been pounded with a meat mallet to tenderize. Some meat cutters will do this before it is placed out for sale.

          1. If I’m not mistaken, round steaks are typically cubed. Chuck steak has better uses because of the fat content.

  3. It was very good but I thought it was too salty. I think I would cut the soup mix in half and possibly try a low sodium beef broth. Someone suggested mushrooms. I might try that next time!

  4. Real good. Made 8 or 9 cubed steaks. Doubled the gravy mixture except still only used one large onion but added mushrooms. Will definately make again.

  5. For those who say the meat was tough, I’ve always simmer until tender. Some experienced saltiness, I believe that is from the onion mix, rather than the broth. Tasty & quick meal. This is one of the 1st recipes I learned from my mom.

Bless your heart! Buy an instant pot! There are a million great recipes to make in a snap!

  6. With ALL DUE RESPECT….
Either ir’s just me, or, it takes quite a bit longer than 25 minutes of prep AND cook time. It took me almost 50 minutes. The vast majority being the simmering of the onions. (Maybe, I was afraid of burning it! Lol)
However…I will say this…IT WAS MAGNIFICENT!!!

P.S. I’m a 56 year old man whose wife of 36 years got a boyfriend and walked out on me, 17 months ago. So…it probably WAS me! 😉😁😊 Ixm still new to all of this.
I did not see where to rate stars…but, my rating isn 5 STARS! NO, SIX!!

THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL RECIPE!!

  7. I did this, with mushrooms, and it was delicious, also precooked my meat in the pressure cooker, and added red vinger, the ingredients and meat to another skillet. It was yummy.

A very tasty, quicky recipe. I will definitely try again. I got rid of most of the oil after frying. I just allowed a bit of oil to cover the frying pan and proceeded to add broth and so on and so forth.

I didn’t use soup mix. Dehydrated onion and salt are the two main ingredients in the mix. Since you have real onions already, it seems redundant. I added onion powder for even more onion flavor, garlic powder, black pepper, salt and some thyme.

  9. Great recipe! I also feel like it needs a “little pizzaz” added, will have to play w some spices next time! But great as is too! TY

    1. Try sprinkling the meat with Charlie’s choice. It has all the flavors you need. I believe you can buy it on Amazon. We use it on almost all our meats.

  10. This was a quick and certified meal. Ingredients was simple and we already had it at home. I did not have to make any runs to the store at all. I cooked this with a side of rice, homemade cornbread, and peas. It took me approximately 20mins to do everything!!! My fiance and I love it.

  11. I’ve made this as written but felt it needed something more. The last time I made it, I sautéd mushrooms in a little butter and combined with the onions and it turned out great.
