Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy is one of the easiest slow cooker meals to make. Just a handful of ingredients, about 5 minutes of prep time, and 6 hours in the crock pot and you have a warm and delicious down-home meal.
To me simple foods are the most comforting and this Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy couldn’t be simpler. It will remind you of supper at your grandmother’s house.
How To Serve
Shredded white meat chicken is absolutely swimming in a thick, rich, and flavorful gravy. Serve it over white rice or mashed potatoes with a side of green beans or peas for a family meal like no other. And don’t forget the Yeast Rolls!
Ingredients Needed
- 2 packets chicken gravy mix
- 1 (10-ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
- Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Chicken Breasts
- Sour Cream
How To Make Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy
Full recipe instructions can be found below.
The ingredients can be mixed together right in the crock pot so there are no dishes to clean for this meal. Just dump 2 packets of chicken gravy mix, a can of condensed chicken soup, 1 3/4 cups water, and some black pepper and garlic powder in the crock pot and stir.
Add the chicken, place the lid on top, and set to cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours and walk away.
- Remove the lid from the crock pot, stir in 1/3 cup of sour cream to give the gravy some creaminess, and shred the chicken. So easy!
Equipment Needed
You will need a 5 to 6-quart or slightly larger slow cooker. I love my Hamilton Beach 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker.
Should I Cook Chicken On High or Low?
When cooking boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the slow cooker, I recommend using the LOW setting. Cooking them on HIGH can make them dry and chewy. Newer slow cookers tend to get much hotter than old ones and even the LOW setting cooks pretty hot. Your chicken may be done in less than 6 hours on LOW if you have a newer model.
How To Store
Leftovers reheat well if you have any. Store for 4 to 5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in a microwave.

I used cream of celery for 2 reasons. One I was out of cream of chicken and to add some flavor variety. I also added fresh carrots, garlic and onion first and cooked an hour before adding chicken because my crockpot always cooks chicken fast even on low and I’m left with crunchy veggies.
Looks good! Do you think I could put dumplings on top and cook?
Does the chicken need to be cooked before it goes in?
could you cook on high, if so, how long?
Does the chicken have to be thawed? Lol
I’m making this tonight. What’s the green stuff in the picture? Is it cilantro?
Thank you for sharing this recipe. It turned out perfect and was so easy to make.
This is the first thing I’ve ever made with my crock pot and it is AMAZING. Took less than 10 minutes to set up and it was ready by the time I got out of work. I accidentally forgot to put the sour cream but it’s amazing as is. Definitely making this again and going to try with the sour cream next time.
So I made this for dinner today and it turned out pretty well. Next time I’ll have to add more chicken, and for some reason the gravy never really thickened up like I wanted it to. Any advice on how to fix that? It tasted really good, those were my only issues with this recipe.
Have u ever heard of Wondra it’s a gravy thickener… let’s just say it works really well for perfect consistency
corn flour thickens gravy
Add some cream cheese to help thicken it! I use it in my Alfredo sauce too for the same reason!
Excellent! Excellent dish. I used low sodium cream of chicken. The dish turnt out great. My children loved it. I will use this recipe again.
SO good! I just put the ingredients in the pot, stir it up, toss in the chicken and 6 hours later, dinner is done. I serve it over riced cauliflower with salad or another veggie. Chicken just falls apart. Making it for the second time today.
Tasted bland…. needs more flavor
Do I need to cook the chicken ahead of time, or can I put it in raw, and let it cook in the crock pot?
Put it in raw
Since we are remodeling, we don’t have a real kitchen.. I appreciated that it made our TV room/garage smell great for hours and was SO easy.. served over white rice. The family ate it up!
I will 100% make this again. VERY good and VERY easy.
I used cauliflower rice (first time ever) I think this would have been even better with regular rice.
This was easy enough and the kids loved it. I used low sodium cream of chicken and low sodium gravy packets. I also used a mix of boneless chicken thigh and breast.
Made this tonight. Flavor was there. Definitely needs for chicken for my liking. Will make again but may double up on chicken next time.
I served this delicious chicken dish over noodles. Worked as well as mashed potatoes or rice!
May your own gravy it’s very simple.
This recipe sounds yummy & easy to make! However, I agree that using cream of chicken has ‘lots’ of sodium. Could you use ckn broth instead? I hope so? When I make this, I’ll be adding diced carrots.
Can you say: 5000 mg of sodium per serving ?
Don’t say that!!!!, It looks DELICIOUS!!!
What if you used low sodium soup and lower sodium gravy mixes. That would definitely lower that sodium count
I’m getting ready to try to make a gluten free version of this. I’ll post results later.
Did you try a Gluten Free recipe? What did you do and how did it turn out?
I made a gluten free version of this. I made gravy using 2 cups chicken broth, 1/4 cup corn starch & 1/4 cup of butter in a saucepan on med heat til boiling. Then I put that in the crock pot with gluten free cream of ckn soup and the pepper and garlic. It’s cooking now so I will update with how it is after we eat it tonight 🙂
How many servings does this make?
