This simple and delicious Italian Sausage and Peppers recipe is a breeze to whip up for a family meal. It’s a classic meal that never gets old. Serve it over rice or pasta or stuff it into hoagie rolls for a filling dinner the whole family will enjoy.
Flavorful chunks of Italian sausage are combined with diced tomatoes, garlic, oregano, basil, lots of red and green bell pepper and onion. It’s a comforting meal but light enough to be enjoyed on a warm summer day.

Italian Sausage and Peppers
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
- 1 package Johnsonville Naturals Mild Italian Sausage
- 1 green pepper,, thinly sliced
- 1 red pepper,, thinly sliced
- 2 sweet onions,, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic,, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Add vegetable oil to a large pan and heat over medium-high heat. Add sausages and cook until browned on all sides. Remove sausage from pan and set aside (Note: You do not need to cook it through at this point.)
- Add onion and peppers to grease left in pan and cook over medium heat until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Slice sausage into 1 to 1 1/2-inch pieces.
- Return sausage to pan along with all other ingredients.
- Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, until sausage is cooked through and sauce is thickened.
- Serve on hoagie rolls if desired.

Great recipe, I substituted fresh tomatoes and added 1/2 tsp of balsamic vinegar to the cut tomatoes along with some salt and pepper and a table spoon of olive oil.
Soooo good!! I doubled the amount of red pepper flakes because I like spice, but other than that, I made the recipe according to the instructions and it was delicious! I put mine over some jasmine rice, and it made enough for about 5 days of meal prep!
I’ve got to say, one of the best S & P recipes I’ve tried. I used 8 spicy Italian sausages and used about 2 1/2 peppers (red & green combo) and 2 1/2 thinly wedged yellow onion. Also used fire roasted garlic diced tomatoes and jarred minced garlic. I also only used a healthy pinch of red pepper flakes. The rest of the recipe was made as written. So quick and so delicious (though it really made a mess on my stove… small price to pay!).
I love this recipe! It’s the only one I use for sausage, peppers and onions. It’s easy to make once you slice all the peppers and onions!
Great recipe & super easy which Is something that id important to me . I used Italian seasoning instead of the various spices and I also used the beyond plant based Italian hot sausages. I think next time I’ll try the sweet Italian ones . It was really good and comforting meal that was pretty simple and straightforward to make !Would definitely recommended!
This sounds very much like a sausage and pepper recipe I used to make in the ’80. It was from a Campbell Soup recipe book. Unfortunately, they stopped making the tomato soup that was used in it, it was not your normal tomato soup. I haven’t tried to make it since, but we loved it over rice. I’ll try this one sounds great.
This was a really good recipe. I added a little extra red pepper flakes for the heat. Overall a really good tasty recipe. Worth giving it a try. 💗
Easy and great! I served it over polenta. And, I used fire roasted canned tomatoes.
