Using a crock pot is a super convenient way to make a dessert. There’s more leeway in cooking time, so not much of a risk of burning anything.

Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler made from fresh apples. So easy!

This recipe starts with 6 cups of peeled and sliced fresh apples. I use a mixture of Granny Smith and either Honey Crisp or Gala. The apples get tossed with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in the crock pot. No mixing bowl needed. Everything is done in the slow cooker for easy clean-up.

A box of yellow cake mix (no need to add anything to it) gets sprinkled on top of the apples, along with a little more cinnamon.

Finally, 1 stick of melted butter is drizzled on top. The butter and the liquid that comes out of the apples as they cook, is all the liquid needed to form the dry cake mix into a delicious cobbler topping. Easy Peeazy.

  1. I want to make 12 servings. Will it make it too mushy in one crockpot? I’ve make the 6 serving before and was delicious.

Answer not given to what’s size slo cooker is used. I find that subscribers of particularly slo cookers most often fail to specify what size cooker they used. That is why I do not bother with such recipes.

  3. I chose this recipe because my husband bought six apples and wasn’t eating them (haha), and my oven is broken and can’t be used right now. So I was really excited to find a recipe that fixed both issues. I checked it after 2 1/2 hours but it was still mushy on the top, so I left it for another hour almost. It was cooked more at the top but still not crispy so I called it quits to keep the bottom from burning. My family said it tasted great but needed a little crunch, which of course can only be achieved in an oven. All in all, a great recipe if you’re short on time and need a dump-and-go and recipe, or if you need a crowd-pleasing dessert without access to an oven. But if you want classic apple cobbler it’s better to use an oven.

  4. Sad day! I made this for my brother’s birthday today, and the cake mix is all goopy still… I tasted it, and it does taste good but just mushy. I cooked it on high for over three hours too. Now I’m sticking this in the oven in hopes that maybe some of the mix will harden. Crossing my fingers!

  5. Followed recipe exactly and the top part of cake mix was raw and a doughy mess. Made this for Thanksgiving and was so disappointed with this recipe! Good thing I had pumpkin pie as a back up. Are you only supposed to use a cup of the cake mix or something?? Wont be trying again 🙁

  6. My worst fears – that this recipe would make a goop of cake and not a crusty cake – were realized. That said, everyone liked it. I think it helped that they weren’t going into it expecting a true cobbler consistency. I used significantly more spices than was called for and accidentally put in too much nutmeg (thinking it was cinnamon) – this was a really good accident. I suspect I used 3 tsp of cinnamon and 3-4 tsp of nutmeg plus maybe a tsp or so of ground cloves. I also added about a 1/4 cup of whole milk because I was using a gluten free yellow cake mix and they do not include milk in the mix (regular gluten box cakes have nonfat milk in the mix). I let it go on high for about 3-4 hours so that the brown sugar caramelized – this also helped the flavor. Again, consistency was not great (cake-goopy is probably the right term), but the flavor was great!

What size of a crockpot do you suggest? I will be making it for Celebrate Recovery so I need to double the receipe.

Made this for an end of year church meeting for a dessert, and was even asked for the recipe. Did not change a thing, and thought the cake mix, even with the melted butter on top, would still be dry, but no! There was no apple juice at the bottom, and it was perfect, and everyone was asking what the smell was, because it smelled so good! I said, I fixed dessert to celebrate the end of the year, and when the meeting was over, we could have some. Everyone enjoyed it, so thanks!

  9. Turned out great! Easy, we used a spice cake mix instead of yellow cake mix and it was amazing. Will be doing this again!

  10. Tasteless glop. Cooked for three hours. Mixed butter and cake mix into a crumble. But this is a tasteless muck and waste of time and apples.

  11. Right now at the moment I am making this recipe I only realized I forgot to put the cooking spray on the bottom :(. Will it burn???

  12. Making this this weekend! But I’m a little confused, am I using nutmeg or allspice? You had mentioned nutmeg in your dessert into.
