Deep-Fried Candy Corn

Deep-Fried Candy Corn is perhaps the best way to eat candy corn. A warm, crispy fried dough ball with melted candy corn inside, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Candy corn can’t possibly get any better than that.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn

Every year I say I am going to go to either the State Fair in Columbia, SC or the one in Raleigh, NC. But this time of year I seem to be so busy that many things on my fall to do list don’t get done. Biking the Virginia Creeper Trail? Been wanting to do that for 5 years. My kids are too old to even want to do it anymore.

I have plans to make it to the State Fair this year (like always) but just in case I don’t make it, I decided to cook up a little State Fair-esque treat. There always seems to be a competition at the State Fair for the craziest fried food. Or at least, that’s what I hear. I wouldn’t know because I never make it there.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn
Deep-fried Candy Corn is one pretty crazy fried food. I’m not a huge fan of the taste of candy corn, but frying them in a simple batter of Bisquick mixed with buttermilk, an egg, and some cornflakes, incredibly enhances their flavor. Or maybe tames it.

Cornflakes seemed like a strange addition, but they really helped the flavor. I wouldn’t have known they were there had I not been the one to add them to the batter. You don’t notice a crunch or anything. I had forgotten how much I like cornflakes and I ate them for lunch three times this week.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn
This recipe is from the cookbook Southern Living The Way to Fry: Fresh, fabulous recipes for the modern Southern cook which I got for Christmas last year and am just now getting around to cooking something from. It has a whole section of crazy fried foods including Deep-Fried Jack and Coke and Deep-Fried Pimiento Cheese Sandwich.

I don’t deep fry foods that often so the only question is should I try the Fried Jack and Coke this year or save it for next year? And would it be an inappropriate food for my teenage kids to eat? Lol!

  1. Times are a changing, since this post. I’m going to give this a run up the pole and see how it flies. I like the Frosted Flakes idea. However I’m thinking Air Fryer. works great on the deep fried cookie

They definitely are better when they are warm. It’s been almost a year since I’ve made them so I can’t tell you for certainty how long they are good because I just can’t remember. I think they should do fine for at least a few hours.

  4. before i read your post, i thought you should take these to the nc state fair! this is a good use of candy corn!

I can’t believe it, you found the one thing I’ve never seen be fried before! I live in NC and have been to the NC State Fair, my favorite fried food was the fried oreos! I have seen all sorts of crazy fried things, even fried PB&J. You should go sell your fried candy corn at the fair! 🙂

Oh my word! I didn’t think I could like candy corn anymore, and then you went and deep fried it. Yum!

  9. I’ve seen everything now, Christin! I would never think to fry candy corn, but it sounds oddly good! The corn flakes actually sound good here. This is some fun fried food!
