Blackberry Mint Juleps

Blackberry Mint Juleps make a refreshingly sweet summer cocktail. The scent and the flavor of the mint combined with the sweet tartness of fresh blackberries is a winning combination. Along with some bourbon of course. The blackberries turn the mint julep a gorgeous shade of purple.

Mint Juleps are made for summer in the south. If you don’t have a mint plant in your backyard, I suggest you run straight to your nearest garden center and get one. It is the hardiest plant ever and with very little effort, it will reward you year after year with copious amounts of fresh mint.

You’ll be making mint juleps (and mojitos!) every weekend. There’s so many delicious ones to try!

Simple Syrup

The sweetness in these mint juleps comes from a simple syrup. It’s best to make it in advance since it needs to be cooled completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Type Of Bourbon

Use whichever bourbon is your favorite. I like to use either Makers Mark or Four Roses.

Equipment Needed For Blackberry Mint Juleps

  • Blender- to puree the blackberries.
  • Fine-Mesh Sieve- to get rid of the blackberry seeds.

PREP: 10 minutes
COOK: 0 minutes
TOTAL: 10 minutes
SERVINGS: 3

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Blackberry Puree

  • 1 1/2 heaping cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 tablespoons water

Mint Julep

  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 4 mint leaves, torn into pieces
  • 2 1/2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 1/2 ounces blackberry puree
  • mint leaves and blackberries for garnish

Instructions

  • Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until sugar has completely melted. Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Place blackberries and water in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour mixture through a fine-meshed sieve into a bowl or glass measuring cup. Push on mixture with the back of a spoon to get all the liquid through. Discard seeds and pulp.
  • Place simple syrup and mint leaves in the bottom of a glass. Gently muddle to release the oils in the mint.
  • Add bourbon and blackberry puree. Stir.
  • Add ice to glass and garnish with mint leaves and blackberries.

Notes

You should have enough blackberry puree for 3 drinks. Add an extra cup of blackberries and an extra tablespoon of water to the blender if you need more than 3 drinks.

  1. I’ve had a mint julep once and I know I would like this blackberry version a whole lot more! I love blackberries in cocktails and this color is just gorgeous!
